skate egg case (aka mermaid's purse)
I have been collecting Mermaid's Purses this summer. I first discovered them during our dune shack residency in 2007. I had no idea what they were at the time, but they were like mysterious little maracas with bits of sand trapped inside their fragile air bodies. The collection number is now up to around 30. Not quite sure what I will be doing with them all, but they are making a nice collective pile of sculpture for the time being. Stay tuned for more creative responses to these amazing treasures from the deep sea.
